The June Technology Evening was postponed because of AAF, which meant it missed publication in the July magazine, therefore, there is two months’ coverage in this August issue.
June Technology Evening
In June we were fortunate to have Bill Peet, managing director of Swagelok, who presented on the topic of ‘Tube fittings’. As Bill explained, the point of a tube fitting is to convey liquids, gases and other substances through closed systems as safely, conveniently and reliably as possible. These are often in environments that are highly corrosive or contain extreme temperatures, and they must also often maintain a vacuum, or withstand high pressures. From high-purity fittings designed to minimise particle generation and entrapment, to high-strength fittings designed for high pressure, users need tube fittings that deliver dependable, leak-tight performance. The branch appreciates Swagelok’s kind sponsorship of this meeting which everybody appeared to enjoy immensely.
July Technology Evening
July saw Rob Wright, managing director of RJ Connect, give an enthusiastic, entertaining and knowledgeable presentation on network security. With the rapid development, advancement and global acceptance of technologies such as the IIoT, more devices are being brought online, a scenario which, if unmanaged, exposes processes to cyber threats and attacks. It was in this context that Rob explored the risks to industrial processes due to inadequate network security and pointed out that it is becoming a growing requirement that vendors, users, and system integrators prove that their network devices comply with the security requirements as defined in the IEC 62443-4-2 Level 2 standard.
Networks need to be protected against unauthorised access, unencrypted key data, incomplete event logs, unsecure data transmission, and human setting errors. Rob went on to outline that it is vital to monitor and evaluate potential risks, and to ensure prevention against intrusion and attacks in order to to protect sensitive data. Security events must be audited with a user-friendly security management system and continuous monitoring of the network is also critical. With an interesting presentation, great attendance and lots of networking afterwards, it was a most successful evening and the Durban Branch, thanks RJ Connect for its sponsorship.
Golf Day
The annual Golf Day was held on 9 June at the Kloof Country Club. As can be expected in Durban in winter, the day was glorious – warm and sunny – and as most golfers agreed, beat an average day in the office hands down.
With 24 four-balls competing, the competition was a ‘Fourball Alliance Stableford’ with two scores to count. The branch would like to thank all those who participated, as well as our valued sponsors.
