Secunda Branch

All controversy set aside, all fights forgotten and all tempers cooled down. It has happened. The Secunda Branch golf day has passed, and what a day it turned out to be. We could not ask for a better day, not too cold not too hot and not too wet, just right. This long-awaited day was really enjoyed by everyone who attended, those who played the game, those who caddied along, as well as those who provided the necessary support at the 'T' boxes and clubhouse.

The day started early when all participants were welcomed at the clubhouse. Those who provided the necessary thirst relief and first aid for starving golfers were directed to the various locations to set up shop. The golfers started at 09h00, and already I could see that it was going to be a very hot day. The first four balls headed straight for the shade in amongst the trees to the right of the fairway. On the 10th the balls headed straight over the fairway into the trees on the far side of the dogleg hiding under the tall grass away from the sun, and I said to myself. "This day is gonna be a great day."

What we did not bargain for was the great air show provided free of charge by the guys from Inventory Technologies. Coming all the way from Johannesburg in a Gyrocopter, after using the fairway on the first hole as a landing strip, two heavily padded bodies popped out. When they left later in the day we were entertained with a really daring take off. Some of the onlookers had to change underwear and I am glad I was not the one sitting in the back seat all the way home.

The prize-giving ceremony went smoothly again, with the traditional wit from Piet Groenewaldt (kept under control by Brian Edwards). The Secunda Branch thanks all the sponsors who made the day possible; their efforts are greatly appreciated.

Our golf day will be the last Thursday in May from now on. An early reminder to our colleagues at the Johannesburg Branch and anyone else interested: make your bookings early. We hope the Johannesburg Branch has a day as successful as ours. Our spies will be there to judge your day to see if you can do it any better. Best of luck! The other branches must inform us of the dates for their events.

Now it is back to the drawing board to plan the activities for the rest of the year and to satisfy our members' queries about membership, invoices, certificates and copies of the journal. The next big event for our branch will be the initiation of our first sub-branch in Witbank on 28 June 2001 and we will report on that in the next issue.

Golf shirts and golf caps with the SAIMC logo are available in all sizes in white and navy blue. Please order from Brian Edwards on fax: (017) 638 0639.
