SAIMC: Cape Town branch

October 2012 SAIMC

The Cape Town branch held its latest Technology Evening on Thursday the 30 August at the Eskom Marketing Centre in Edgemead. Robert Wright of RJ Connect (previously RJ Programmable Techniques) gave an interesting presentation on ‘Edge to Core Industrial Ethernet’.

Wright covered the entire spectrum of industrial Ethernet in a time of 90 minutes, a remarkable feat as the topic is vast. This was a very interesting subject and relevant to the challenges of industry today, where Ethernet is becoming an important component of modern control system architectures. The Cape Town branch would like to thank RJ Connect for its continued support and the informative presentation.

Tip from Wright: “If you want to learn more about the subject come to the training.”

Branch activities

Following our exciting site visit to the Koeberg nuclear power station, the branch is planning a visit on 10 October to the South African Naval Base in Simons Town. The visit will provide a first hand look at our navy’s assets and associated control systems.

The first batch of SAIMC branded golf shirts and jackets have arrived in Cape Town and the committee is very excited to be providing members with clothing that communicates the brand at other events. We look forward to see you all at the next meeting where a group picture will be taken.

Excellence in automation project award

Members and interested parties are reminded about the branch’s ‘Excellence in automation project’ award. All nomination forms and supporting documentation need to be submitted before 1 October. Candidates can be nominated by the membership or can be proposed by any participating organisation within the Western Cape area.

All nominees must be SAIMC members in good standing with 2012 SAIMC officers not eligible during their term of office. Nomination forms and further information can be obtained from Selvan Murugan: [email protected]

NB: All C&I projects will be considered, there are no limitations with regards to complexity, application or size.

Next meeting

Further details of the next Technology Evening will be communicated via e-mail, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Members are encouraged to join the branch on these platforms to ensure that they receive all branch communications, just search for ‘SAIMC Cape Town’.
