Cape Town branch

October 2009 SAIMC

For the Cape Town branch of the SAIMC 2009 began with a history lesson taking us back to the basics of engineering approaches. This was thanks to Hendrik Keyzer of Real-Time Solutions who delivered a passionate presentation and practical demonstration on micro controllers, their use and under-use within industry. This set the stage for a year of focus on the basic principles of our field of engineering.

The August technology evening, sponsored by Yokogawa SA, again focused on the basics, as well as the practical application of various flow measurement devices. Our speaker for the evening was Yokogawa’s training manager, Nico Marneweck. His passion for field instrumentation and control did not go unnoticed by any in attendance.

Nico’s talk was tailored to introduce and pass on valuable information on the principles of flow measurement in different industries. The audience was kept attentive by the ‘spot’ questions that Nico posed to them. Correct answers were rewarded with prizes that Nico handed out. It was by far the best technology evening for the year thus far. Thanks Nico!

The September technology evening talk was given by branch chairman, Theo Schmidt. Theo delivered a practical and detailed talk on the subject of metrology and its application in the broader scheme of automation. The talk focused on measuring principles, as well as instrument calibration and certification. Theo has excellent knowledge of this and the transfer of information benefited all those that attended.

The branch is currently focusing on ideas and planning for the year end function. This event was sorely missed at the end of 2008, but 2009 promises to be a great one. A dinner and dance evening that shall NOT include a technology talk is being planned. Details of the event will be issued in due course.

Membership levels, as well as attendance levels during the technology evening, have increased significantly. This is as a result of an e-mail-blitz campaign before each technology evening. The branch is constantly looking to increase the membership levels in the region, with options such as transportation of students to the technology evenings and starting a social networking site under review. An open invitation is sent out to all members or potential members for suggestions on how we can achieve this goal. Please remember that the branch exists to serve all automation practitioners and you are welcome to contact the branch representatives at any time.

The SAIMC strives to be the choice organisation that represents the automation industry’s needs within the country so please send your comments to the branch management.
