Durban branch

July 2008 SAIMC

At our last meeting we were addressed by Johan Maartens, the SOX compliance manager at Siemens Business Services in Midrand. Johan serves on the SAIMC Council and the Council sub-committee tasked with interfacing with ECSA and handling our Continued Professional Development (CDP) point’s issues. This is the same presentation Johan gave recently at a Johannesburg branch meeting and he will gladly e-mail a copy to anyone interested. He can be contacted on +27 (0)82 373 2741 or johan@maartenspro.com.

Advanced imaging technology is gaining popularity in the measurement and control industry. The Durban branch will be hosting a talk: 'Imaging in Africa' by Barry Dudley, on 6 August. Members and non-members are invited to join us for this interesting talk on imaging applications. Some of the topics include: image analysis (counting and sizing); accept reject systems; stack emissions; forest fire detection; licence plate recognition; facial identification and other aspects of verification.

The talk will be a live, realtime, practical demonstration of the technologies in action with examples from KZN sites, and end-users present to share their experiences. Queries regarding image submissions for analysis during the talk should be addressed to I-Cube on images@I-Cube.co.za.

Venue: Electrical engineering building, University of KZN 17h30 for 18h00.

Booking is not essential.

For more information contact John Owen-Ellis, +27 (0)82 336 2938.

It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
