The last technology evening of the year for the Durban branch was held on 6 November, and was kindly sponsored by Swagelok. Keenan Naidoo, a mechanical and field engineer at Swagelok Sub-Saharan Africa gave a very interesting discussion on clean energy – an introduction to hydrogen.
Green energy is a hot environmental topic, as countries, organisations, and individuals look for ways to better understand and implement sustainable solutions and cleaner energy. One such solution is hydrogen, which is purported to be an energy with many admirable benefits.
To understand this element better, Keenan gave a comprehensive presentation focusing on hydrogen’s properties, production methods and types to provide a solid foundation for understanding its role in green energy. He discussed common myths for and against hydrogen, as misconceptions can hinder its adoption, and he also addressed its environmental impact and material considerations, such as hydrogen embrittlement and the compatibility of metal alloys, as these factors can influence the safety and efficiency of hydrogen systems.
With plenty of interaction and questions from the audience, the evening was a great success, closing as always with a delicious dinner and networking.
