Technology presentation on GMSI weighbridges

Early in April, SAIMC - Zambia, in conjunction with AST-GMSI - RSA, held a Technology Presentation on GMSI weighbridges and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), at the Hotel Edinburgh in Kitwe.

The presentation attracted over 45 participants and was quite relevant to C&I members, chemists and metallurgical professionals, especially in the mining industry. It was an all-round cost-effective and a highly productive package for the industry.

GMSI weighbridges make possible a fully featured inbound and outbound materials management system. This improves productivity by effective management of material flow in and outbound of plant area. It links material movement from the weighbridge directly to the invoice/billing system and reduces costs by improving management of fleet and contractors. Plant security is improved by reducing the need for user intervention, standardising workflow and introducing automated alarms. Risk to companies is reduced thanks to timeous, accurate information available to management and security staff.

Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is a powerful user-friendly application that manages information in order to establish an effective, secure and efficient laboratory environment. Lab productivity increased and turnaround time was reduced by automating processes and calculating from sample runs. Supervision and training time is reduced by the use of system user guides and alarms. There is reduced risk to the end user through timely decision-making in production system by having a direct link to the Lab via GMSI LIMS.

Zambian SAIMC membership continues to grow

The membership drive at the Zambian Branch is in high gear. Once again, the three Sub Branches - Kitwe, Mufulira and Chingola - produced 15 new members and were awarded SAIMC membership certificates at the end of the GMSI LIMS and Weighbridges Technology Presentation on the same day, 8 April 2005. Some were graded Senior Members while others were slotted in the Member category of the SAIMC Membership Grades.

Andre Liebenberg, engineering superintendent - Instrumentation, graced the SAIMC Membership Certificates Presentation Ceremony. He encouraged new members to be the bearers of the SAIMC core values, as they took challenges in the industry, especially on the mines. The industry expected a better professional approach to instrumentation problems on the plant. He further expressed happiness for the opportunity to associate with SAIMC - Zambian members and said he was proud to be an instrumentation practitioner.

The new members later had a group photograph with the guest of honour (Mr Liebenberg) before they joined the rest of the participants of the technology presentation for a social moment of drinks, sponsored by the business development manager for AST-GMSI, Mr Dave Capstick.
