Superior quality control for carpet tile specialists

July 2002 Flow Measurement & Control

One of the UK's leading commercial carpet tile manufacturers Milliken Industrials relies on Krohne Corimass mass flowmeters to maintain quality and production levels at its factory complex in Wigan, Lancashire. Coriolis P class parallel bent tube system flowmeters are installed on the modular carpet tile printing range and are linked to inverters controlling pumps regulating the dye circulation system. Krohne P meters are designed to reliably and accurately measure the mass flow rate, density and temperature of liquids, suspensions, emulsions and gases. At Milliken, they measure the mass flow of the dye liquor and feed the information back to the inverters via the PLC.

Precise monitoring of the automated process ensures that a constant and repeatable quantity of dye is applied to every carpet tile, to enable perfect colour matching of the product - which is essential given the nature of the product. Linking the mass-flowmeters with the inverters that control the dye circulation pumps enables automatic control of the pump speed to compensate for changes such as increasing pressure drop across the filtration system. The site in Wigan produces carpet tiles for the UK and European commercial markets, using eight Krohne P class meters, which were selected following extensive competitive testing of equipment from different manufacturers by Milliken in America.

Krohne P class parallel dual tube mass flowmeters use the Coriolis principle and intelligent signal converters to determine mass flow rate, total mass and volumetric flow rate, density temperature and concentration in various selectable units. They are suitable for a range of accurate dosing and batching processes and for measurement of minimal flow rates.

Process parameters such as electrical conductivity, viscosity, density and temperature have no effect on the measurements and the various materials of the wetted parts are suitable for most applications. The P Class meters are particularly suited to high temperature and special applications involving aggressive materials. The Corimass range offers ease of installation, simple operator control using plain text prompts, a wide choice of connections and consistent accuracy, stability and repeatability making them a popular choice for applications in textiles, food and beverage, chemical and papermaking industries.

Krohne is a leading manufacturer of level and flow measurement instrumentation, and is one of the few able to offer a complete range of flowmeters, including electromagnetic, ultrasonic, vortex, variable area and Coriolis.
