Linearise all your signals

July 2019 Industrial Wireless

Signal conditioners have progressed over the years to become mainstream protection front ends for PLC and DCS control systems. They provide signal isolation and protection from the harsh plant conditions in marshalling and field termination cabinets, keeping the control equipment in a more controlled environment.

Sometimes, however, the analog signal computations and required signal manipulation are better implemented in the signal loops closer to the process, and this is where the Omniterm Function Synthesiser (TFX) comes to the fore with a host of features and functions.Tank linearisation functions cover cylindrical and spherical tanks, but non-uniform tanks can be linearised with a 32 point strapping table. Features include:

• SIL 1 compliant IEC 61508.

• High reliability MTBF of 44 years.

• 24 V DC powered.

• Two isolated inputs 4-20 mA or 10 V DC signals.

• Inputs converted to 16 bit resolution.

• Power for two wire transmitters.

• Input to output isolation 1500 V.

• Configurable universal output.

• Output overload detection.

Function options include average, deviation, difference, multiply, ratio, minimum, maximum, track and hold, peak, valley, rate of change, ramp limited, log function, square root, square root integration, 32 point linearisation, integrator analog to pulses out, and frequency.

The benefits are:

• Field or workshop configurable.

• Free configuration software.

• Extremely flexible operation.

• 22,5 mm module width.

• Dip switch input and output range/type selection.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
