The PFS-A from M&W Asketeknik is a portable instrument designed for sampling and measuring the flow of pulverised coal in fuel pipes between mills and burners. It is ISO 9931 compliant and has several cost saving features. The sampler is linked to the fuel pipe through an airlock, which gives a dustless connection, and the coal sample is collected in an exchangeable container attached to the sampler. The sampling probe is connected to an electric motor which causes it to rotate. A PLC in the control box ensures isokinetic extraction and calculates the coal flow in the pipe. Only one person is required to operate the PFS-A.

Optimisation of combustion results in benefits such as reduced NOx emissions and a high quality fly ash which has commercial use instead of having to be disposed of. Slagging, fouling and fireside corrosion are also minimised. The sampler also contributes to fuel savings by minimising excess air. It reduces wear in pulverisers and enhances control of firing conditions when testing new coal types.

Typical applications for the PFS-A include extracting isokinetic and representative samples for determining the particle size of coal, as well as other parameters such as coal flow in fuel pipes. The sampling procedure can be performed independent of the operator, eliminating human error, and the special snap-lock reduces sampling time. Based on electronic signals from the built-in scale weighing the sample, the PLC calculates the total mass flow of pulverised coal in the complete cross section.
