Flow Measurement & Control

Precision flow measurement from SICK Automation

April 2013 Flow Measurement & Control

It is common to have subterraneous gas deposits in combination with oil fields. A mixture of crude oil, gas and water is extracted, which has to be separated, but oil and water still remain in the gas, in considerable quantities. The separated gas is quantified by volume flow metering. For an ultrasonic gas meter based on a standard sensor technology, it is difficult to measure reliably because water and oil settle on the sensor surface causing potential signal interference at the measuring body. SICK Automation was approached to provide an ultrasonic gas measurement solution that assures accurate gas measurement in such ‘wet’ application conditions.

Implementation

The solution is a sensor specifically developed for this application. This special transducer design is physically extended and works at 135 kHz. According to SICK Automation, using this type of technology prevents signal interference from the measuring body. Regardless of the sensor surface contamination, a stable signal quality is guaranteed and a reliable measuring result can be supplied. In addition, the sensor in the FlowSic600 has been integrated in a 2-path layout. Liquids that deposit on the base have a minimal influence on the signal quality, which means that the system works with high reliability and is optimal for applications with a high liquid content.

Customer benefits

* High measuring accuracy.

* Stable fiscal measurement.

Companies in the oil and gas industry have high standards regarding technology and capacity, which applies also to their suppliers. More than twenty FlowSic600s are installed and in operation on one offshore platform. A senior maintenance engineer commented: “It is possible with this device to have a high quality measurement of the gas flow even with a high content of liquids and dirt particles.”
