Rand Water selects turbidity instrument

June 2001 Flow Measurement & Control

Early this year the Rand Water Board awarded a contract to Paterson Candy to refurbish the station 2 filter plant at Vereeniging. As part of this order, 40 turbidity instruments were required. Four competitors were invited to submit their turbidity instruments to Rand Water for testing.

Over a period of several weeks these turbidity units were tested under identical conditions in the Rand Water Laboratories and on site. At the end, it was the unanimous decision of the Rand Water staff involved that the most suitable unit for their application was the GLI turbidity instrument.

The particular features of the GLI unit which contributed to this decision were:

* Use of the latest four-beam infrared technology to continuously monitor turbidity, as approved by the US EPA (GLI Method 2) and which complies with the International Standard for Turbidity Measurement (ISO 7027 - 1984(E)).

* Exceptional accuracy and measurement stability at the low levels of turbidity required for quality drinking water (automatic electronic zero calibration once every minute).

* The unique calibration cube provides a factory-certified, 100% reproducible NTU value. The CalCube is a stable secondary standard which is not affected by light, temperature or ageing which allows for quick and easy maintenance and calibration verification by semi-skilled staff (as opposed to employing expensive highly skilled staff).
