Satel radios

May 2009 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Satel radios are used in place of a data cable and can reach distances of up to tens of kilometres, depending on the terrain and output power. These radios have been used for a multitude of applications in numerous sectors, for example: airports, industrial plants and traffic control. A new product that has just been released is the SATELLAR digital system, which is a smart radio modem combining TCP/IP functionality, a Linux platform for customer specific applications and a versatile modular structure.

The SATELLAR digital system is comprised of three units:

* The radio unit (RU).

* The central unit (CU).

* Expansion units (XU).

Typically, a central unit together with a radio unit are used in a network as a master station or in locations where an Ethernet connection is needed. For radio router stations, the central unit is not necessarily required. In these cases, the radio unit can be used alone.

The new radios feature improved RF sensitivity, the tuning range has been broadened to 20 MHz and advanced features such as over-the-air software updating have been developed.

The SATELLAR digital system can reach several kilometres and users can extend this using a good antenna. Proper antenna configuration makes a network more controlled, closed, and tolerant to possible interference. The three types of antennas distinguished by radiation characteristics are as follows:

* Omni-directional.

* Offset pattern.

* Directional.

The use of different antenna types is highly dependent on the shape and nature of the radio network for example:

* Point to point – directional antennas.

* Point to multipoint – omni-directional antennas.
