Process measurement instrumentation for Foskor's Extension 8 project in Phalaborwa.

Jan 2000 Level Measurement & Control

EMS (Engineering Management Systems) recently ordered process measurement instrumentation valued at almost R1 million from Endress+Hauser for Foskor's Extension 8 project in Phalaborwa.

Foskor's core business is the production of phosphate rock from raw ore with small amounts of copper and magnetite as the by-products. The existing plant has an ore handling capacity of approximately 2800 t/h with the extension having a capacity of 800 t/h. The new extension has two major differences from the existing plant - the milling process is a dry process, and for control purposes they have implemented true fieldbus technology from the measuring instruments to the control room.

Included in the order was the noncontact Prosonic T ultrasonic level measurement, the Promag electromagnetic flowmeters for accurate flow measurement of practically any conductive fluid, Cerabar pressure transmitters, Promass mass flowmeters for liquids and compact capacitance level measurement for conductive and nonconductive products.

The instrumentation is being used for milling and separating of ore as well as for flotation cells for the separation process and thickeners. The Profibus PA digital communication supplied by Endress+ Hauser provides bidirectional data flow from device to control for instant notification of instrument malfunction, as well as radical cabling reductions, ease of engineering, commissioning and maintenance. Instruments and their status are now easily monitored as a result of all the data being available in the control room.

Foskor has ordered instrumentation from Endress+Hauser in the past. These orders included instrumentation to measure levels, pressure and flow. Foskor's decision to go with Endress+Hauser for instrumentation was based on previous positive experiences with the company's equipment and service. It has more than 200 of the company's ultrasonic level measuring points in the existing plant.
