Level Measurement & Control

The measure of all things radar

February 2008 Level Measurement & Control

The new radar level measuring devices OPTIWAVE and OPTIFLEX, from Krohne, are not only cutting-edge in terms of application reliability, but have also proved their worth in the field. Both devices have HART capability and are supplied together with PACTware and free DTM functionality, including data recording and reproduction. Set-up procedure has been simplified by the Quick Assistant and large graphic display, which is controllable from four piezoelectric pushbuttons situated external to the housing.

The OPTIWAVE is a 2-wire radar level gauge based on frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology. Operating at 26 GHz with high dynamic response and broad bandwidth, the FMCW radar system achieves high resolution, accuracy and maximum application reliability. The enhanced signal dynamics allow measurement in even the most difficult applications. Weak signal reflections are readily interpretable, making measurement easier in situations where wide measuring ranges and poorly reflecting media must be accommodated.

The OPTIFLEX uses pulsed time domain reflection (TDR) technology. The sharper signal pulses allowing measurement of interfaces as thin as 50 mm. A particularly useful feature is the integrated nil echo recording for the first metre. This eliminates interference from spurious reflections off highly agitated surfaces, foam or adhesions to the sensor itself. The outstanding time base stability, a key factor in TDR systems, enables the consistent reproducibility necessary for repeatable measurement accuracy.

The sensors are available in a choice of gold, silver, platinum and nickel/PFA coatings, offering high corrosion resistance and elasticity through the incorporation of nano technology.

Standard accuracy of ±3 mm is specified for both ranges of devices.
