Fieldbus reduces CAPEX and OPEX spending in process automation installations through reduced wiring and more information availability from field instruments. Remote configuration and asset management are two further benefits of fieldbus installations in process plant.
The R2-series Segment Protector from Pepperl+Fuchs improves installation, commissioning and operation for Foundation Fieldbus and Profibus PA networks. The protector is a smart wiring block and a key enabling element for fieldbus. Each field device is hooked up to the fieldbus via its own spur connection with built-in short-circuit protection. In Zone 2 the High-Power Trunk concept can be utilised with up to 500 mA on the main line with Ex nA protection. Ex nL energy limitation at each spur of the protector allows live working on the field instrument without a hot work permit. The trunk remains free from feedback and thus in operation. The units are available for 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 outputs with individual short-circuit protection.

Small design features make a big difference in handling and clearly distinguish this smart wiring block. The trunk line utilises a T-shaped connector which means that there is only one clearly visible point where the fieldbus terminator can go. Over-termination is avoided bringing simplicity to fieldbus installations. The Segment Protector can be exchanged under live conditions leaving the network undisturbed.
The R2-series is designed for cabinet installation. Snap hooks securely fasten the device on the DIN-Rail. All plugs feature retaining screws for reliable connection. Test points are included to efficiently hook up diagnostic tools.
EtherCAT interoperability removes industrial networking barriers
