SmartScan interface profiler to detect and measure interface levels

August 2006 Level Measurement & Control

The detection and measurement of interface levels has long been a process problem. It is often required that the top layer and the interface layer are effectively measured, and emulsions mixing is taken into account. Ohmart/VEGA manufactures the SmartScan interface profiler which may be a solution to this problem.

By using a dry well and advanced technology, the SmartScan is able to measure changes in specific gravity over the entire range of the vessel. This means that multiple interfaces can be tracked, emulsion layers can be pinpointed, and mixing and separation of materials can be easily identified. This product can detect interfaces between liquids, solids, foams and vapour space in virtually any type of vessel. It can detect a single interface, report the position of multiple interface layers and provide a complete density measurement profile.

Layers are detected based on the change in product density seen when an interface is present. A dry well is inserted into the vessel. A sensor travels up and down inside the dry well and uses a small amount of radiation to provide a complete density profile. A single well model uses a backscatter method of detection while a dual model uses a transmission method. The position of the interfaces is provided to the electronics module in position (level) and density of product. These signals are then used for display or process control.

Both the single well and dual well systems can operate in process temperatures up to 48°C and are ATEX and CSA approved for non-hazardous and explosion-proof areas, with a scan depth of 46 m (single well) and 25 m (dual well).

Common applications that benefit from the SmartScan are HF acid settlers, water/oil interface measurement, clarifier vessels, inventory control, media separations and slurry processing. Industries served include petrochemical, chemical, offshore and mining.
