Low-cost ultrasonic probes
February 2005
Level Measurement & Control
GPC has released a family of ultrasonic probes that are suitable for measuring from 130 mm to 27 m with 1" NPT, 1,5" NPT, 2" NPT, 3" NPT and 6" NPT mountings. The new ultrasonic transducers (with high efficiency, narrow beams and wide frequency bandwidth) work under many conditions over a wide temperature range. They are insensitive to mountings and with help of the transceiver and smart signal processing, they eliminate unwanted echoes from tank walls, standpipes and product buildup.
The transducers provide a self-cleaning operation that sheds product build-up and condensation from their faces. The ultrasonic probes adapt to any environmental conditions, their power and receiver sensitivity adjust automatically to any distance and reflecting object.
The AGC system keeps the echo amplitude constant over the designed operating range. Built in communication with a PC allows storage of the current output and temperature in a datalogger. The ultrasonic probes can be connected in the network using RS485 with GPC's protocol and Modbus RTU.
Connecting to a PC provides access to a diagnostics utility, allowing the user to determine when there is loss of echo, temperature sensor failure, noise error, etc. Echo profiles and echo stability chart can be accessed with the software and some parameters can be changed, including reference setting and other calibration settings.

Level measurement of an acid dosing tank at a WWTP
Level Measurement & Control
Ferric chloride and other acids are essential chemical substances in water and wastewater treatment. To control the dosing of acid solutions, an Australian wastewater treatment plant uses a special container to store, mix and add these chemicals. The company opted in favour of KROHNE’s OPTIWAVE 1540 radar level transmitter

Level measurement of leachate from sewage sludge humification
Level Measurement & Control
A municipal utility in eastern Germany operates a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant with sustainable sludge treatment. The ultrasonic signal was being partially deflected by the wind, leading to frequent false measurements and inefficient process workflows. The problem was solved by replaced the ultrasonic level sensor with KROHNE’s OPTIWAVE 1540 non-contact radar.
