Level Measurement & Control

Radar technology casts its reputation in cement

September 2003 Level Measurement & Control

The Reflex-Radar BM100 is an accurate, and flexible level detector. It comes into its own wherever conventional level sensing techniques are unreliable or inaccurate. Versions are available for level measurements on liquids or granular materials, together with one for liquid/liquid interface.

One model can simultaneously measure liquid levels and interfaces, with a level accuracy from ±3 mm, and an interface accuracy of ±10 mm or better (with a known dielectric constant). Level accuracies of ±100 mm are achieved with the vast majority of powder and granular materials. Its external, flange-mounted electronics and display unit are attached to a sensor assembly, which hangs down inside the tank or silo. Level measurement up to 60 m is possible, using a range of probes.

Guided by the probes, low power microwave pulses at 1 MHz frequency are transmitted into the tank. As they encounter any change in the dielectric value of the products in the tank - ie, from air or gas to a liquid - the pulse is partly reflected back up the rods. The electronic unit then calculates the interface and liquid levels in the tank, based upon the return time of the reflected pulses. Offering high reliability and repeatability of ±1 mm (±20 mm for powder), it can be used in conditions from -50 to +200°C, from -100 kPa to 10 MPa, and it is CENELEC certified for zone 0 applications (liquids) and zone Y (powders).

Compatible with Windows software and other important communications standards, the BM100 has a HART 'smart' connection on the 4 to 20 mA signal, and it can be supplied with an RS485 connection.
