Level Measurement & Control

Acoustic level measurement

August 2003 Level Measurement & Control Surveillance

The Hawk SULTAN series of acoustic wave level transmitters emit an acoustic wave pulse, which is reflected from the surface of the material being measured. The reflected signal is processed using specially developed software to enhance the correct signal and reject false or spurious echoes. The measured signal is temperature compensated to provide maximum accuracy to the outputs and display.

It is this principle of operation that elevates the Hawk SULTAN range to one of the most powerful level measurement systems on the market. This is a high power device with a long range capability even on 2-wire loop power. There is no direct contact with the media, which can be up to 80 m from the sensor.

Available from Protea Automation Solutions, there is a wide range of transducers to choose from making it suitable for a wide range of applications. There is also a choice of communication systems that can be employed - Hart, Goshawk, Modbus, Profibus and fieldbus. A multiple head capability, to a maximum of 128 points, reduces the cost per unit.

Prime areas of application include wastewater (open channel, inlet screens, sumps, pump stations, etc). Mining (crushers, surge bins, conveyor profile, block chutes, etc). Power stations (boiler bunkers, raw coal bunkers, ash pits, etc). The applications extend into many other sectors including food, cement, plastics, chemicals, paper, and quarries.
