Kobold Instrumentation has introduced the Kobold NGR that works on the principle of time domain reflectometry (TDR, also known as guided microwave or guided radar) and offers a robust and low-maintenance solution for level measurement and monitoring.
Conventionally, capacitance level meters have been used in small tanks. The disadvantages of these are their dependence on medium dielectric constants and a specific probe calibration in tanks. NGR offers a more cost-effective alternative, eliminating these disadvantages and offering a minimal dead band of just 25 mm at process connection.
The NGR offers a standard reaction time of better than 400 ms and can detect level changes of up to 500 mm/s without any problems.
Unlike older technologies, TDR offers measurement readings that are independent of chemical or physical properties of the process media and a measuring performance that is not affected by the density or conductivity of the fluid, making it consistently accurate even for deposit-forming and foaming liquids. The NGR offers a cost-saving solution for accurate level measurement and monitoring in oil- and water-based fluids, coolants, grinding and hydraulic oils or blends containing cleansing, degreasing and cleaning agents. The NGRs easy to read display and menu guided operation allows real-time level and status information. The analog output is flexible, using either 4-20 mA or 0-10 V switchable, with two or optionally four PNP/NPN outputs.
The instrument has a stainless steel probe with a maximum shipping length of up to 2000 mm that can be easily changed (users may adapt the length to install their own probe - up to 4000 mm) or cut to length. Commissioning is also made easier by the sensors’ ability to simulate levels even when no fluid is present.
NGR is suitable for applications including factory automation, machine tool and machine building, water and process industries, building services and plant engineering.

Level Measurement & Control
A municipal utility in eastern Germany operates a state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant with sustainable sludge treatment. The ultrasonic signal was being partially deflected by the wind, leading to frequent false measurements and inefficient process workflows. The problem was solved by replaced the ultrasonic level sensor with KROHNE’s OPTIWAVE 1540 non-contact radar.

Level Measurement & Control
Measuring the level of crude oil in storage is essential for safe and efficient operations. VEGA offers solutions that effectively address the challenges, ensuring precise and consistent level measurements in crude oil storage facilities. VEGA’s sensors offer reliable data on the volume, level and pressure of all types of media. Accurate level measurement is complicated by crude oil thermal expansion properties, particularly in lighter oil grades.
