Dip tank level monitoring and control

Allpronix locally develops and manufactures a laser level transmitter in both 40 (AL40) and 100 (AL100) metre ranges.

The AL40/100 is programmable via the on board push buttons and blue-backlit LCD display, can be powered from 220 V AC or 24 V DC, and has two dry contact relays with programmable set points (1x N/O and 1x N/C contact per relay). It also has a 4-20 mA output for level/distance monitoring. Both units have CE certification for export to international customers.

Allpronix recently supplied four of the AL40 models to a new customer for a tank level monitoring and control application, where the 4-20 mA signal of the laser is used for local display via the Datexel DAT8050 loop-powered LED display.

The customer’s process has a storage tank, a mixing tank, a day (or feed) tank and a dip tank, which has inner and outer sections. The product from the inner section constantly flows over to the outer section of the dip tank and is then pumped back into the inner section. The product has similar properties as acrylic paint, so the surface is quite reflective.

For the first phase of the project the AL40 monitoring the dip tank’s outer section level, controls a solenoid valve, while the other three units are only used for visual monitoring via the DAT8050 display.

In this process it is imperative that the inner section of the dip tank remains full, so the outer section is fed with fresh product from the day tank by opening the solenoid valve when the level goes below the desired minimum, specified by the customer. The AL40 monitors the level over a span of 200 mm and the solenoid is activated by the normally open (N/O) contact of the relay.

The reflective nature of the product’s surface initially posed a potential challenge for the AL40, since the laser measures the time between light pulses sent and echo pulses received. The extra reflection challenge was easily overcome by the software algorithms of the AL40, and the customer is now able to keep the dip tank product at its optimum level.
