Level Measurement & Control

Level measurement technology saves lives

September 2014 Level Measurement & Control

Vega’s pressure and level measurement technology is used in just about all industries, and for a variety of applications. One of the more challenging is the deployment of sensors to protect and measure in the offshore oil and gas drilling business, where facilities must be kept exactly in position even in the roughest seas experiencing waves up to 30 metres high.

To this end, environmental influences such as wind and waves are measured and GPS navigation data carefully evaluated. Vega meets the requirements of these challenging conditions with robust, seawater-resistant housings and technology. All measuring instruments are tested and certified according to the requirements of the leading international classification societies for use in offshore production facilities and floating, production, storage and offloading (FPSO) ships.

One of the sensors used on an oil rig is the radar-based VegaPuls 62. In addition to filing level measurement, this instrument is also well suited for wave height measurement. With its measuring range of up to 75 m, it can be used for this purpose on any off-shore platform.

To enable fast evacuation of people from a floating oil production facility in emergencies, free-fall lifeboats are attached to the platform. Splashdown is coupled with wave height measurement i.e. the lifeboat is released at the right moment so that it hits the highest point of the wave, which considerably reduces the impact forces for passengers and cargo.

Unaffected by wind, temperature and fog, the VegaPuls 62 ensures dependable measurement under all conditions. Even in the heaviest swells, it works reliably and safeguards the lives of onboard operating personnel.

To provide the best possible advice and support on site, Vega employs service technicians who have undergone special training for oil production platforms.
