SAIMC: Johannesburg Branch
August 2002
SAIMC
To those of you out there who might have been confused by the reported 'June Golf Day' in last month's Branch news, our apologies. At the time of writing, that golf day was to take place in June, but we moved it to July to compensate for another event taking place the day before our scheduled event. Thus, as you read this, the July Golf Day took place on Friday 15 July at the Leeukop Golf Course near Kyalami, and consistent with all events organised by the Johannesburg Branch it turned out to be a huge success.
We also discovered a very capable Master of Ceremonies in our committee during the prize giving afterwards, in the form of Warren Mitchell, our head of the Golf Sub-Committee. Well done Warren, you and your team did a great job! Congratulations also to our Chairman, Cornu Perold, for bringing the two 'Siemens' ladies with him for the day, no brighter a shining light was there on the day than the Siemens watering hole. On top of it all, the fun continued later at the prize giving when these two ladies started doing the rounds with the trays full of shooters.
Great fun was had by all who attended, while the rest of our members sat in front of their TV sets with blankets over their knees, shame.
Not to get too distracted, our July Branch meeting was hosted by Endress+Hauser (again!), and they brought Dr Christoph A. Rompf from Germany to teach us more about SIL safety systems with regard to vibrating fork level switches. One can always depend on the team from E&H to support the SAIMC to the hilt, and the quality of their speakers is always worldclass. No wonder their competition is yellow with envy.
We are presently trying to secure a site visit to the Telkom Control Centre here in Johannesburg, but it is a hell of a job to get past all their red tape and draconian 'secrecy' regulations, apparently this facility is out of bounds for the 'public'. Watch this space for an update.
Parting shot: It is always interesting to watch when that 'other' branch throw their toys out, it keeps us amused. At least it shows that there is life and passion out there, which is a whole lot more than we can say for the rest of the branches. Witbank is getting their act together very quickly, Cape Town is definitely having fun down South, but the rest.... ?
