First and foremost, I would like to extend my heartfelt New Year wishes to all our members, patrons and business partners. May your new responsibilities come with a higher degree of power, accountability and wide range of comforts as the year and its new challenges unfold.
I write this while intending to check my do list for the year and reflecting on what the New Year has in store for us. I would like to extend this journey of reflection to you. Please share your thoughts and insights and tell us what you would like to see emerging in the industry, and also the issues you think the SAIMC should be tackling. You may refer your thoughts to our admin office at [email protected].
We will soon be commencing with annual general meetings across our branches in all parts of the country. The national AGM and the stakeholder breakfast will take place in March 2017. Be on the lookout for more details. I cannot wait to engage with multiple stakeholders and individual members at the above-mentioned occasions.
Exactly a year ago, I wrote about reasons why members must join the SAIMC and I would like to expand on that as follows:
Why am I here?
I am here for the same reason I think most people join the SAIMC – to change the world by making meaningful contributions to the engineering fraternity and to the nation of South Africa.
I know this can sound hyperbolic – and yet it is true. We have done it, we are doing it and we will continue to do it. For example, the opening of the University of Pretoria’s SAIMC Control Laboratory took place in February 2014 at a prestigious ceremony that included the vice-chancellor. In 2016, the SAIMC committed R600 000 aimed at contributing towards the erection of the Automation Laboratory at the University of Johannesburg. The SAIMC supported the Tshwane University of Technology with starting up the First Technology Challenge for secondary school children, whilst continuing to support the First Lego League for the primary schools. The SAIMC continues to form coalitions with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa) and educational institutions in order to confront challenges experienced by South African businesses and our individual members. These are some of the many reasons why I and many others find themselves at SAIMC today. In simple terms, I am here because the SAIMC has the unparalleled capacity to make an impact.
With this in mind, contact our admin ([email protected]) for membership and patron application forms and make an impact that goes beyond the borders of ‘self’. We cannot wait to have you on board.
Yours sincerely,
Oratile Sematle.
