From the editor's desk: New year, new look

January 2014 News

Welcome back after the holidays and all the best for 2014. From this year, SA Instrumentation and Control has a new structure but it isn’t a radical change and our focus has not deviated. What we will be doing though, in every issue, is to reflect more closely on the technologies that are shaping the future of modern manufacturing.

For instance, measurement is now, and always will be, the bedrock of any successful process control or automation system. To give better coverage to this in print, the team felt we should do away with our biannual features on temperature, pressure, flow, level and mass, and combine them all into one new feature, Process Measurement, to appear in every issue. Industrial wireless and IT in manufacturing are also emerging as ‘must haves’ and it will be interesting to see whether they become as essential to manufacturing as they are in our everyday lives. These also will now feature in I&C every month and in July we will be doing a 2014 follow-up to the Technews Industry Guide – Wireless, that proved so popular last year.

PLCs, and particularly PACs, no longer constrained by computing power or memory, are becoming more versatile by the day. We will be keeping a closer eye on this space and reporting more frequently as events unfold. First cousins DCS and scada are also on our list, along with industrial computers and all matters safety related.

Through these changes we hope to bring you a richer publication every month without losing any of our traditional focus on control and instrumentation. For the full 2014 media profile please contact Jane, Tina or Angie, and remember to e-mail us any constructive feedback.

We wish you a happy and prosperous 2014.
