SAIMC: Cape Town branch

June 2012 SAIMC

Celebrating excellence in automation projects award

This Cape Town branch has designed a new award to recognise SAIMC members that have excelled in the conception, design or implementation of an automation project within the Western Cape area.

The project should have had a big impact on industry in the area and must be documented and approved by the submitting organisation. (Technical originality, benefits and successful implementation should all be displayed.)

Candidates can be nominated by the membership or can be proposed by any participating organisation within the Western Cape area: nominations will be reviewed by a committee consisting of C&I industry leaders. All nominees must be SAIMC members in good standing with 2012 SAIMC officers not eligible during their term of office.

Administration and winner selection

All nomination forms and supporting documentation need to be submitted to the Cape Town Branch chairman, Raymond Cloete, before 1 October. The committee will then review and judge based on contribution, papers, patents and final presentation to branch members. Candidates will subsequently be required to present their papers at a branch meeting. The floating trophy as well as the project plaque and certificate shall be presented to the winning organisation during the SAIMC Cape Town Awards ceremony. Nomination forms and further information can be obtained from Selvan Murugan [email protected]

Social media

The branch has taken a decision to broaden and modernise its communications channels. Look out for branch activities, updates and general technical discussions on the following sites: Facebook (SAIMC – Cape Town), Twitter (@SAIMC_CapeTown) and LinkedIn (SAIMC – Cape Town branch). Members, students and all interested parties are invited to join and engage with the branch through these mediums. If you have any difficulty accessing these sites contact vice chairman, Mothibi Thabeng [email protected]

Branch activities

There are exciting plans for the branch this year. Site visits to Koeberg power station and the South African Naval base at Simons Town are in the pipeline. We are also engaging with institutions of higher learning and industry on various ideas to collaborate on C&I skills development and training. The branch has been invited by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s mechatronics department to attend its students’ final projects presentations. Training will be one of the branch’s main focus areas this year. Expect to see more information and updates in future articles and on our social media platforms.
