SAIMC Zambia 2007 AGM

April 2007 SAIMC

The Branch held its AGM at Hotel Edinburgh, Kitwe, on 4 March 2007. The new Executive voted in is Titus Tito: chairman, Ardon Kabalu: vice chairman, Leo Chikasa, secretary, Rodgers Kayombo: treasurer, Yoram Malama: committee member, Jones Kalela: immediate past chairman, Lillian Ngoma: branch secretariat administrator.

At the same well-attended function the SAIMC Zambia 2006 Banquet project was voted the 'Best Project of the Year', with a cash prize. Members pledged to work hard to achieve the set goals on the 2007 Year Planner, earlier presented by the outgoing branch chairman, Jones Kalela.

The outgoing chairman thanked members, the SAIMC Council, the business community and industry for the support given during his pioneering office, which he admitted was a big challenge for him. The branch has been registered with government, a finance system put in place, a branch secretariat established and membership grown from four to about 200. The branch secretariat has a full-time staff and 60% equipped with office equipment: a computer, industrial copier, printer and scanner. The three-storey building has a central library for members who are scattered around the country.

However, Jones pledged to continue working hard for the SAIMC, especially in the field of C&I training and development. He acknowledged that the Zambian government, industry and higher institutions of learning were responding to the fact that measurement and control was integral to the national economy. Concerted effort, therefore, was needed in addressing the skill loss and updating knowledge on new technologies.

SAIMC Zambia was already happy to see Chambeshi Metals providing scholarships to students doing C&I courses at Mufulira Technical Training Institute (MTTI). Northern Technical College (Nortec), Ndola, has invited the branch to sit on the board to help come up with a curriculum towards establishing a school of C&I in 2008. Jones urged all stakeholders, including the business community, to pull in resources and improve the level and quality of measurement and control skill in Zambia or the industry performance will be lopsided.

At the AGM, the incoming chairman, Titus Tito, congratulated students from MTTI for electing two representatives, Deborah Phiri and Musa, to represent their colleagues on the branch executive. He also asked members to give him the same support given to the outgoing chairman and pledged to work hard during his term of office.

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
