Outstanding year for SA I&C

December 2006 News

SA Instrumentation & Control has had a remarkable year in 2006! It has maintained its position as one of the leading publications for the instrumentation and control industry. Our website (www.instrumentation.co.za) is doing tremendously well with over 64 000 visitors in the six-month period between May and the end of October. It goes to show how many people value and rely on our publication as a source of information. Of these online readers, over 30% are from South Africa and about 20% from the US. Our May issue was a memorable issue, being the biggest one to date. Our Instrumentation & Control Buyers' Guide for 2007 is also the biggest that we have ever put together. It has seen myself join as the new editor.

We would like to extend our sincerest thanks to our readers for their continued loyalty and support, without whom there would be no reason for the publication. Also, we would like to thank all the contributors for all the interesting and leading-edge material that was submitted for publication that makes our magazine the leader that it is. And last but not least, we would like to thank the production team, the administration and accounts team, and technical support for their dedication and hard work - these are the people who make this the winning publication that it is.

Something exciting to look forward to in the coming year is a regular column by Jim Pinto who is one of the most interesting and outspoken people in the controls business today. Jim has a background in electronics engineering. He was born in Bangalore, India, lived in England for about eight years, where he founded KPE Controls. He moved to the US in 1968 and worked for Burroughs Corporation in Pasadena, California. He then moved to San Diego, where he founded Action Instruments in 1972.

Since its inception in 1972, Jim Pinto was president and CEO of Action Instruments based in San Diego, California. In March 1998, Action was acquired by Eurotherm (UK), which in turn was acquired by Invensys in June 1998. Jim retired from Action Instruments after Eurotherm was acquired by Invensys, and since then he has been, according to a short description of him from his website, a "technology futurist, angel investor, speaker, writer, industry commentator, analyst and consultant". His popular e-mail newsletter, JimPinto.com eNews, is widely read (with direct circulation of about 7000 and web-readership about two to three times that number). His areas of interest are technology futures, marketing and business strategies for a fast-changing environment, and industrial automation with a slant to technology trends. He offers much analytical and thought-provoking insight into these matters which we will be bringing to you from January.

2006 has gone by so quickly and before any of us has realised it, it is already the end of the year. This is the time of year we all look forward to: a well-deserved break from work; going away on holiday; spending quality time with friends and family; festivities and celebrations. On this note, we at SA I&C wish you a blessed festive season and all the best for the New Year.
