BMG, a division of Invicta Holdings, has achieved Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) Net Zero Waste Level 2 Certification, marking a significant milestone in the company’s sustainability journey and demonstrating how practical operational improvements can deliver measurable environmental and commercial outcomes.
The certification recognises BMG’s achievement in diverting more than 90% of operational waste from landfill through a structured programme focused on waste reduction, reuse, recycling and resource recovery. More importantly, it reflects a broader commitment to embedding sustainability into everyday business operations, rather than treating it as a compliance exercise.
“This certification is the result of years of operational focus, employee commitment and a willingness to challenge the way we have always done things,” says Roland Bontinck, sustainability manager at BMG, and group sustainability lead for Invicta Holdings Limited. “Too often, sustainability is viewed as a theoretical concept or reporting requirement. Our approach has been different. We have focused on practical implementation, measurable outcomes and creating solutions that benefit both the business and the environment. Sustainability should not be something that sits alongside the business; it should become part of how the business operates every day.”
The journey began with a simple question: what are we throwing away, and why? By accurately measuring waste streams and analysing everyday operational activities, BMG identified opportunities to reduce waste generation, recover valuable resources and improve operational efficiency. Materials previously regarded as waste, including pallets, cardboard, plastics and other recyclable products, became valuable resources within a structured circular economy programme.
The initiative has delivered benefits beyond environmental performance. Through improved resource management, waste reduction and recovery initiatives, BMG has reduced disposal costs, improved operational efficiencies and demonstrated that responsible environmental management and commercial success are complementary objectives.
The certification forms part of BMG’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, which focuses on integrating sustainability into business decision-making, operational excellence and long-term value creation. Net Zero Waste is one of several strategic initiatives supporting BMG’s vision of building a more resilient, resource-efficient and responsible business.
“Level 2 certification is an important milestone, but it is not our destination,” adds Bontinck. “Continuous improvement is fundamental to sustainability. We will continue identifying opportunities to improve resource efficiency, strengthen circular economy principles and further reduce our environmental footprint while delivering value to our customers, employees, shareholders and the communities we serve.”
The achievement was celebrated during a formal plaque presentation attended by BMG executives, sustainability champions and project partners. Representatives from Green Gap, Don’t Waste, and the GBCSA joined BMG’s leadership team in recognising the collaborative effort that made the certification possible. BMG also acknowledged the contribution of its certification partners whose technical expertise, guidance and collaboration ensured that operational improvements were accurately measured, independently verified and aligned with internationally recognised sustainability standards.
