Display systems for mobile machines

June 2025 SCADA/HMI

The new 11 cm ecomatDisplay from ifm features 16,7 million colours, a high-resolution display with optical bonding and a powerful processor, all packed into a compact, robust housing. The HMI not only offers brilliant image quality but also impresses with its brightness and wide viewing angle. This ensures that the machine operator can easily see the displayed content from almost any position. Programming with CODESYS 3.5 provides the user with all important features such as trend, trace, alarm manager, user manager and web visualisation. The Linux-based operating system also enables customisation such as individualised visualisation with QT.

Like all robust HMIs of the ecomatDisplay family, the 11 cm version is perfectly equipped for use in harsh environments. Permanent vibrations, water or dust cannot damage it. The display features the increased EMC resistance, for which ifm is renowned, and has E1 type approval so that nothing prevents its use in road traffic. In short, the 11 cm ecomatDisplay sets new standards in the field of compact, robust HMIs.

Some of the benefits are:

High resolution: 16,7 million colours, 1000 cd/m2 in brightness and a high-resolution display with optical bonding ensure optimum readability, even in strong sunlight.

Robust: Heat, cold, water, ice, dust or vibration cannot harm the ecomatDisplay. With its robust die-cast aluminium housing, glass fibre reinforced plastic and thermally hardened glass, the compact HMI masters every challenge.

Powerful: The powerful dual-core 1,4 GHz processor, 4 GB memory and 1 GB DDR4 RAM leave nothing to be desired.

Communicative: Whether CAN, CANopen, J1939, Modbus, Ethernet/IP, MQTT, OPC UA, TCP/UDP Ethernet protocols, network variables via Ethernet or USB, the ecomatDisplay overcomes any communication barrier.

Energy saving

With a low energy consumption of 5 watts (Ethernet version) to 8 watts (USB version), the compact ecomatDisplay is ideally equipped for the future and is also ideally suited for small AGVs or electric vehicles with small batteries.

Flexible and modular

Regardless of whether a version with a touch screen or keys is required, all compact HMIs can be loaded with the same firmware and application. This means that the devices can be flexibly selected and used according to requirements without any additional software or programming work.

The ecomatDisplay can be likened to the beating heart of a mobile machine and is ideal for communication. Versions with a touch screen and/or RGB keypad are available for convenient operation. If the ecomatDisplay is only used to show information, models are also available without any input functions.

Thanks to the many different system sensors, such as the light sensor, the functions can be conveniently monitored and operated. For example, it is possible to have the brightness adjusted automatically, or the on-board voltage read out quickly and easily.

The ecomatDisplay is also a true all-rounder when it comes to communication. Support for a wide range of communication protocols, such as Modbus server/client, CAN, CANopen, J1939, TCP/UDP Ethernet protocols, network variables via Ethernet or USB, OPC UA, Profibus and EtherCAT ensures smooth communication with other interfaces.

The user also has access to a PDF viewer and to video and audio players. While the video player and PDF viewer play a particularly important role in the fields of support, diagnostics and maintenance, the audio player can be used for spoken warnings, for example, supporting the user directly during machine operation. In addition, the QR code generator can be used for high-quality support information.

Many mobile machines operate in the vicinity of people, animals and other machines. Camera functions are vital for maximising safety during operation. The ecomatDisplay meets these special requirements with the help of dynamic camera integration for person detection and operating area monitoring. Dynamic camera integration is available for both analogue and digital cameras, and includes an overlay function among others. This means that warnings can be projected directly onto the camera image to warn the machine operator in good time. All these features and functionalities make the ecomatDisplay a real all-rounder that is ideally suited for use in mobile machines.

Robust and reliable

Construction machines, agricultural machines, transport vehicles and municipal or commercial utility vehicles are outside every day in all weathers, braving extreme temperatures, dust and vibrations. To ensure that every job is done reliably and efficiently, the automation technology must also be correspondingly robust.

With system solutions from ifm mobile machines are optimally equipped for every challenge. For everything from sensors and cameras, to cables, to robust HMIs and displays, to decentralised I/O modules or controllers, ifm is a one-stop supplier for high-quality components for use in mobile machines. Comprehensive software module libraries also considerably simplify the integration of the components into the machinery, saving time and reducing development costs, like the ISOBUS that can be integrated with just a few clicks.

Come what may, the system will track that everything is really running smoothly. ifm offers mobile IoT, a simple and reliable solution for development monitoring, fleet management and predictive maintenance.
