SKF lubrication team assists iron ore producer in Liberia

April 2025 Motion Control & Drives

The highly skilled team of specialised lubrication technicians from SKF South Africa has demonstrated its exceptional on-site expertise through the seamless installation of Lincoln Lubrication systems for key customer, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML).

The installation of the new Lincoln Lubrication systems ,sourced by AML from SKF France, called for the expertise of a specialised lubrication team. The SKF South Africa team of specialised technicians is known for its comprehensive understanding of lubrication equipment and has extensive experience in installing lubrication systems and managing large-scale projects.

The project stretches across two sites, Buchanan (port) and Tokadeh (open pit iron ore mine), located approximately five and a half hours apart by road. The scope of work called for the installation of dual line and progressive lubrication systems on three stackers, two bucket reclaimers, a bridge reclaimer and a car dumper used for iron ore handling. The project includes over 852 lubrication points, with 95% of the piping made of stainless steel. Each system takes approximately four weeks to complete on every machine. Some machines are fitted with multiple lubrication systems.

The Lincoln Lubrication systems are designed to optimise lubrication function, ensuring reliable equipment performance, reducing the risk of breakdowns and associated downtime, and extending the equipment’s lifespan, subsequently keeping production up and operational costs down.

Braam gives a shout-out to the SKF team for their tremendous commitment to the project throughout the seven months working on site. Lubrication technicians from South Africa worked alongside their Ghanaian colleagues and demonstrated outstanding workmanship and a sense of ownership in their tasks, as well as in the lubrication systems they installed. “I am incredibly proud of this team who continues to give their everything. Their exceptional effort has left a lasting impression on the customer, who is now exploring the possibility of moving forward with phase two!” concludes Braam.

The installation of all the lubrication systems at both sites is projected to be completed within the next six months. SKF Ghana will be responsible for system maintenance during the warranty period.
