Life after the Meat Board

SA I&C visits Cato Ridge Abattoir
I had the pleasure of being invited by Sam Selmer-Olsen of Green Bean System Technology for a tour of the Cato Ridge Abattoir to see how this monstrosity from a bygone era has been turned around into a viable business. Other abattoirs were not so lucky - their days were cut short with the demise of the Meat Board. Considering the vast quantity of animals that the Cato Ridge facility once had to process, it is no surprise that its refrigeration system is quite a monster! You can read all about this success story in 'The white elephant that did not die'.
Backing music from Endress+Hauser's 50-year bash
I am sure that many of those who were fortunate enough to be present at the Endress+Hauser 50-year celebratory function last year will remember the '60s and '70s hits played by the Zambezi marimba band. (Great background music it was, for such a social occasion.) For those of you wishing to lay hands on the music there is great news: The band has recorded an album at Macsound recording studios - owned and run by Malcolm Finlay, of Penmac Roadshow fame.
Tracks included are the likes of: Blueberry hill, The lion sleeps tonight, Help yourself, Paloma Blanca, Mama Thembu's wedding, etc. The band members (Paul Sibanda, Misheck Mupimbira, Simbarashe Kufa, Causewell Kufa and Ronald Dassie) arranged all the songs themselves, and the instruments are all hand-made. The recording standard is fantastic (and I am picky). Zambezi Marimba Band's CDs are available for purchase from Malcolm Finlay at Penmac, 011 476 2066, [email protected], www.penmac.co.za
We at SA Instrumentation and Control wish all our readers and contributors well over the festive season, and we look forward to a great 2005.
