October 2003 SAIMC

Our August meeting was sponsored by Automated Reasoning and resulted in another excellent function with 36 attendees. A few years ago, the subject covered would have been considered pure science fiction, but it is now a reality. These software tools were originally developed for use on submarines, and have now been declassified and made available for use in industrial applications. The presentation was both interesting and educational. An added benefit was that we were able to meet with people who are using this technology in their plants.

Our meetings are held every month on the second Wednesday. Everybody is welcome to join us and share ideas; we encourage and appreciate constructive discussion at our meetings. There is no charge for attendance, and both members and visitors are welcome.

Annual BMW site visit

This site visit is always a great success. We, the Johannesburg branch have visited BMW every year for the last four years and everyone enjoys the experience of touring this technically advanced motor assembly plant. When you consider the amount of components used to assemble a single vehicle, the logistics for producing 250 cars a day are incredible. All 22 SAIMC visitors came back with a different viewpoint of motor vehicles.

Future Johannesburg branch site visits: Rand Water Board Zukerbosh pump station

Here is an opportunity of a lifetime. On 15 October, park your vehicle in secure parking, board a 60-seater bus at RWB Headquarters and be driven to Vereeniging in luxury. There you will be taken on a tour of a world-class water purification plant with emphasis on the instrumentation and control features. A Patron Member, Siemens has kindly offered to supply liquid refreshments on board the bus. To participate, we are asking a R30 donation. For site visit bookings, contact Johan Grobler, cell 082 853 0153 or send him an e-mail: [email protected]

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our monthly meeting sponsors, all of you who attend and my committee for their enthusiasm and commitment.

Johan van Jaarsveldt, Chairman, [email protected]

The Institute is going to be having a very special and unique function for the last meeting of the year on 12 November 2003. This has become a tradition and has been a far cry from the norm with the last few meetings having the editor of FHM magazine doing a Expose on the mag, Jameson Whisky having the original taster from Ireland showing us how the smoothest of smooth whisky is distilled, to last year when we had the SA Sports Illustrated swim wear edition and their marketing manager with lovely assistant in tow...going through the ins and outs of one of the most successful editions of the year for them and the selection process for the ladies who appear in it.

So this year, true to form, we will be having a special event that will surpass the previous and have the people clamouring to get in. However this is how the cookie crumbles! As we are only inviting the previous attendees of our meetings as a gesture of good will for their continued support... so what to do?

Some of you, due to circumstances beyond your control, have not attended any of the meetings this year... well lucky you as there is still one more meeting to go... so best you make it 8 October 2003.

Having said that, we will have the usual fracas and calling of favours - but let me tell you we will stick to our guns. So we look forward to seeing you on 8 October and again on 12 November for the last but by no means least meeting of the YEAR.

P.S Do not forget the SAIMC golf day on Thursday 6 November 2003 at Leeukop golf club, bookings through Warren Mitchell, [email protected], or 083 644 6999.

Warren Mitchell, Vice Chairman

“Never have so many owed so much to so few.” This phrase is a famous quote by Winston Churchill, referring to the efforts of the Royal Air Force pilots who fought in the Battle of Britain during World War II. It highlights the immense gratitude owed to the relatively small number of pilots who played a crucial role in defending the United Kingdom from the German Luftwaffe.
