Full range of chemical seals manufactured locally

March 2003 Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors

Cape Town-based designer and manufacturer of instrumentation and industrial automation products, Rhomberg, has a full range of chemical seals (also known as diaphragm seals) available. These chemical seals offer protection from a wide variety of process applications where corrosives, slurries or viscous fluids can damage a pressure measuring instrument if it is directly in contact with any of these media. If selected and installed correctly, chemical seals do not only ensure accurate readings of the process media, but also protect the pressure-measuring instrument from damage, thereby preventing substantial replacement costs.

Rhomberg offers four types of chemical seals. The replaceable diaphragm chemical seal has been designed for general use. Rhomberg is the only company in South Africa that offers repairability on these types of seals as the design incorporates an encapsulated system that allows for replacing a damaged foil only, instead of having to replace the complete unit at great cost. In large operations such as the petrochemical and mining industries, this has led to substantial savings in the past. For the dairy industry Rhomberg has developed eight different sizes of special dairy seals.

Flanged diaphragm seals offer the advantage of providing a high degree of accuracy in low pressure or low differential pressure applications. These seals can also be used in certain applications to measure the level of liquid in sealed containers.

The last category, the specialised chemical seals also have the advantage of having replaceable membranes for a reduction in replacement and plant maintenance costs. The range consists of isolation rings, pulp and paper seals and pedestal flanged seals, the latter often being used in such applications as platinum reduction plants. Specialised chemical seals are also available for use in slurry applications.
