The kiln temperature de-multiplexer has been designed to provide a cost-effective means of using a standard multipen chart recorder with a rotating kiln that has switched thermocouples.
The kiln temperature de-multiplexer goes further and provides four different alarm outputs as well as a direct serial interface to scada and PC-based logging and display systems. The system is designed to work with the older type of rotary kilns, which have a single transmitter and multiple thermocouples that are mechanically connected to the transmitter when they reach the lowest point in the kiln's rotation.
A switch closure indicates that the next thermocouple has been connected and the 4 to 20 mA output represents a valid temperature. At this point the current output is latched until the next switch closure is detected when the next thermocouple is connected to the transmitter. The kiln temperature de-multiplexer keeps track of the switch closures and produces 12 4 to 20 mA output signals, one for each thermocouple, which can then be connected to a standard 12-pen chart recorder. Various alarm outputs are provided to indicate to the operator if something goes wrong with the switch or temperature inputs.
The 'analog input out of range alarm' is activated if the temperature input goes outside the normal 4 to 20 mA range; the 'clock fail alarm' monitors the time between the switch closures and if this exceeds a preset time this alarm is activated; the 'sync fail alarm' is initiated when the Sync switch is detected out of the normal sequence; the 'comms watchdog alarm', when enabled, is activated when the serial communications with the kiln temperature de-multiplexer is suspended for any reason. Developed and manufactured in South Africa, the system is cost-effective and can be installed with a minimum of disruption.
