Keying system for DIN 41612 connectors

Enclosures, Cabling & Connectors
Inevitably when a control panel goes up in flames due to an expensive PCB card being inserted into the wrong socket the call goes out for a keying (coding) system to prevent this. Unfortunately a coding system for DIN 41612 connectors has not yet been established.
Ideally such a coding system should: be independent of connector type; fit all commercially available DIN 41612 connectors; be simple (may be retrofitted) and realistically priced; and offer numerous combinations to prevent different cards from having to use the same combination code.
Erni has developed a coding system for DIN 41612 types B, C, D, E, H11, M, Q and R connectors. This coding system is bolted or riveted to the connectors and can therefore be fitted at any time - even if coding is required after the initial design.
Coding is very simple. Coding bars are broken off without the use of tools while a simple tool is available for mass production if desired. It is important that any coding system does not increase the spacing required between PCB Cards beyond the Standard 5,08 mm. The Erni coding system with the connector is 15.4 mm for B, C, D, H11, M, Q and R connectors and 20,32 mm for E connectors.
Benefits of this coding system include: independence of connector type; an incorrectly inserted coded card will withstand a pressure of 250 N; space (width) requirements are static; it has 12780 coding possibilities; it is suitable for existing types and applications; and it may be fitted without modifications of connectors or drilling of holes and may be retrofitted.
