High-energy spark ignitor

January 2003 Maintenance, Test & Measurement, Calibration

Durag's D-HG 400 Series of high-energy spark ignitors are designed for all types of oil and gas burners. Depending on the model, ignition can be triggered with a pushbutton or automatically via the supply voltage. The standard device has both control unit and ignition lance housed in one compact module.

Inside the ignition unit, the energy is stored in a high voltage capacitor, and a robust switching element causes this energy to be transferred to the ignition tip, where it is converted to heat by means of an arc across the spark gap. It is the arc discharge that ignites the fuel.

To ensure ignition in the start-up phase, the unit generates 20 ignition sparks per second during the first minute period, and then drops to five ignition sparks per second. The ignition status is indicated on the built-in LED and through the ignition signal relay's output contact.

The D-VE 500 pneumatic retraction unit automates the ignition process. It ensures that the ignition tip is inserted exactly into the ignition zone of the burner, and after a successful ignition it is retracted from the flame area. If required, an explosion-proof version is available with a separate ignition lance. Durag is represented locally by OEN Enterprises.
