Rugged, new non-ferrous proximity sensors ignore all ferrous materials

December 2002 Sensors & Transducers

Turck is now producing its NF-series non-ferrous barrel style proximity sensors. These unique devices are for use in applications where a non-ferrous target needs to be sensed, but a ferrous material is also present and needs to be ignored. These new NF sensors will reliably detect aluminium, brass, copper and other non-ferrous metals, but will not detect cold rolled steel or stainless steel. Applications include automotive power train where an aluminium engine block needs to be detected but also present are ferrous taps or bolts that need to be ignored. Other applications include food and beverage, conveying and material handling.

New NF-series sensors are rugged, featuring a one-piece stainless steel barrel for superior strength. The sensors' rugged stoneface front face is made of an advanced thermoset plastic specifically developed for improved resistance to weld slag, scratching, pitting and abrasion in MIG, TIG, and resistance welding applications. It offers durability similar to stainless steel face sensors, at standard sensor prices.

The sensors are available in 12, 18 and 30 mm diameter barrel-style bodies. They have a repeatability of ±2% of rated operating distance, and are available with NPN (sinking) or PNP (sourcing) normally-open outputs,10-30 V d.c. operation.
