Data Acquisition & Telemetry

Locally manufactured, multipurpose underground telemetry system is suitable for any terrain

June 2000 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

There are many situations where the SL 2000 system from Sperosens could be of great use, some of these include:

* Fire detection systems for underground alarms where existing cable could be used.

* Environmental monitoring including air flow, temperature and heat stress, vent doors, dust, NOx, O2, CH4, etc.

* Conveyor start/stop sequencing, belt speed, belt load, belt slip and belt tear.

* Compressed airflow and pressure, cooling water flow and temperature.

* Continuous miner monitoring, blast monitoring, materials requisition.

* Remote PLC link up, booster fan control, stope isolation.

* Man tracking, asset tracking.

Service networks consist of four-core electrical cables that distribute DC power and digital communications signals to service point on the cable. These networks can be constructed in a full, free topology format, as having DC power and digital signals on the same cable removes the need for powering the service points individually. Each service net can be up to 40 km long and have up to 40 service points. A service point consists of a transceiver and one or more I/O devices. Up to four analog inputs, four digital inputs and outputs and one anolog output may be handled by each transceiver. There are special purpose transceivers which have RS232 I/O for linking to PLCs and other equipment. The DC supply has sufficient battery back-up in reserve to last for a minimum of 8 h.

The communications networks combine the signals for up to 32 service nets. The system backbone combines the signals for up to 32 of the communications networks and in turn connects to the host computer. Service nets, comms nets and the system backbone are all linked with routers.

The comms nets and the system backbone can be made up of any of the following:

* Two cores in an electrical power cable.

* Two cores in a telephone cable.

* Fibre-optic cable.

* Surface radio link.

* Ethernet LAN.

* Leaky feeder cable.

Sperosens says that its SL 2000 will support all scadas and its multiple user options allow for separate scada graphic pages or separate client server PCs on LAN, supervisor's view nodes on LAN and remote view access for supervisors on telephone modem.
