Sensor modules for easy analytical measurement

October 2002 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Industrial Measurement and Control business of Honeywell is offering two new measurement offerings - conductivity and dissolved oxygen - in its family of DirectLine sensors.

DirectLine's architecture, consisting of an electronics module integral to the sensor, eliminating the additional time and cost of installing an analyser or transmitter, a separate preamplifier and special cable, thus providing significant savings and ease of use during installation, start-up, operation, and maintenance.

Honeywell introduced its first DirectLine module, the Durafet solid-state electrode for pH measurement, in 2000. A few months later, the Meredian II pH and ORP glass electrodes were added to the family.

With all DirectLine modules, the output of the sensor connects directly to any host monitor or control device that accepts standard 4-20 mA inputs and provides external loop power, including Honeywell controllers, recorders and data acquisition systems, PLCs with analog inputs, DCS systems and a host of other recorders/controllers.

Conductivity

For conductivity measurement, the new DL 423 DirectLine electronics module can mount integrally on the conductivity cell and provide a 4-20 mA output proportional to conductivity. For cases where the conductivity cell is submersed, or special mounting applications, the electronics module is also available in a remote-mounting configuration. This line of conductivity cells is compatible with the DL 423 sensor module. These cells are ruggedly constructed for reliable, continuous measurement of electrolytic conductivity up to 140°C and 12 kPa (250 psig). The DL4000 line of conductivity cells is used with the DL 423. The DL4000 conductivity cells are designed with an EEPROM that contains the cell constant and cell calibration factor. This information is automatically uploaded to the DL 423 sensor module upon connection. Cell constants are available for applications ranging from ultra-pure water to acid/base concentrations.

Dissolved oxygen

For dissolved oxygen measurement, the new DL 424/425 DirectLine electronics module can be mounted integrally or remotely on the new Honeywell DL 5000 dissolved oxygen probe. It provides a 4-20 mA output proportional to dissolved oxygen.

The DL 5000's equilibrium probe technology is based on the partial pressure of oxygen rather than the diffusion rate of oxygen through the probe membrane. The materials of construction combined with this unique design result in a no-internal-maintenance probe that is independent of process flow and fouling, ensuring an accurate, reliable, maintenance-free, dissolved oxygen measurement that is easy to achieve. The probe is available in PVC and stainless steel housings, with ppm or ppb configuration, and with integral and remote mountings. The DL 5000 can be mounted using immersion, insertion or flow-through mountings, and it measures and displays temperature as well as dissolved oxygen concentration.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
