Vaal River sewage spillage under control by radio telemetry

October 2002 Data Acquisition & Telemetry

A longstanding environmental spillage problem along the Vaal River is placed under tight control by implementing a radio-based scada monitoring solution in the Vanderbijlpark-Vereeniging area.

Consulting engineering group Lyon & Partners was tasked by the Emfuleni Local Municipality to upgrade all sewage pump stations in the area and to equip these with an effective monitoring and alarm system. The main aim was to prevent spillage into the Vaal River, which is a prime water supply channel to the entire Gauteng area.

In a joint effort by Prime Instrumentation (Vaal) in Vanderbijlpark and UniTemp, an Australian radio system had been proposed to continuously supervise the sewage pump stations effectively along the Vaal River. The sewage pump stations were to be monitored for overflow conditions as well as to alarm on intrusions into the stations, which has been one of the major causes of malfunction.

The new system will be continuously monitoring the running of all pumps along the river - and will raise timeous alarms by cellphone via SMS after hours, should any problems occur. At the same time the control room computer system will alarm if unauthorised intrusions occur in the stations, as one of the main reasons for spillage in the past has been theft of essential equipment.

Each pump station is equipped with an Elpro radio telemetry station checking sump levels and pump conditions. Information is relayed by radio to a computerised central station equipped with the locally developed Adroit scada software.

The project in its initial phase has 10 remote stations and is expected to reach 50 remote stations in its fully expanded phase.
