Stack dust analysis and monitor

September 2002 Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring

The Oldham France EP1000 stack and dust analyser and monitor are well received by various South African companies because of the unique features and stability of the product.

The features include:

* Readings are linear therefore minimising requirement for multipoint isokinetic calibration sampling.

* Installation is made easy with sighting facility while the IP65 rated enclosure allows adequate protection against the elements.

* The EP1000 is able to operate in stack temperatures in excess of 500°C.

* Measurement range is from 0 to 10 g/m (in 10 user selectable ranges). A unique feature is the ability to program up to 10 separate locations or processes. This facility allows the user to use the EP1000 for different applications without re-calibration of the instrument.

* An optical calibrator is also available for periodic checking of the instrument.

* Standard outputs include 4-20 mA, RS485 or RS422 (MODBUS) protocol.

The principal of measurement results in precision over a wide range, as the laser backscattering is proportional to the concentration of dust.

The laser beam backscattering process:

* Pointed into the dust-bearing column, the laser beam is scattered by the dust particles back towards the instrument, providing a signal proportional to dust concentration.

* The light ray emitted by the laser diode goes diagonally across the chimneystack.

* Dust particles inside the light ray, scatters back some light towards the instrument.

* This light is picked up by a light sensor inside the instrument, and is amplified to provide a signal proportional to dust concentration.

The EP1000 uses a laser diode that issues a 2 kHz modulated laser beam, operating with a wavelength of 660 nm. The laser produces an average of 1 mW and falls into the 3 A class.

Advantages of the EP1000 include:

* The use of a blower with overpressure to prevent dust from settling on optical components.

* An optional display and keyboard for easy control.

* The kind of measurement technology is very well adapted for large diameter stacks in power plants, because of no alignment dependence, a very long measurement path (more than 5 m), and no vibration dependence.

* In-situ measurement.

* Synchronous detection permits freedom from background measurement noise.

* Waterproof cabinet enables outside mounting with temperature range -30,

+60°C.

* Display panel on device (optional) permits the user to view the measurements, as well as internal parameters, and to do set up locally.

* Does internal conversion from backscatter signal to output reading in mass/volume (g/³).

* Ventilation and blowing mechanism integrated in the mantle prevents the optics from contamination, by creating an overpressure of air in front of the optics, especially in the chimneys with higher than atmospheric pressure, it also acts as cooling mechanism for the instrument.

* The use of an airflow detector raises an alarm upon blower failure.

* An automatic internal zero check is done to ensure correct zero point operation. No span check is required on a regular basis, due to inherent stability of the laser diode and optical sensor technology. A span check can be done from time to time with the use of an external optical calibration tool.

Suitable applications are scrubber/filter efficiency, stack emissions, etc. The EP1000 has TUV certification and complies with EPA regulations. Spero Group is the sole agent for Oldham France.

In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
