IR thermometers for HVAC

Determining the efficiency of an HVAC system is often tedious and time-consuming. Today, infrared (IR) thermometers offer a faster, more effective way to diagnose duct leaks, blocked steam traps, wet insulation, malfunctioning coils, and or other heat-related problems common to HVAC systems.

IR devices take the surface temperature of objects without touching them by measuring IR energy emitted from the target. Although this technique has been around for many years, advances in IR measurement technology have only recently allowed the development of lightweight, low-cost tools for monitoring processes and speeding up plant maintenance. Modern IR thermometers are now used in scores of industries.

One of the latest instruments available is the Raytek MT4 which covers the range -18 to 260°C, has a laser sighting, and is relatively inexpensive. It displays the temperature within 500 ms to an accuracy of 2°C. Several other portable models are available, which cover the range from -50 to 3000°C.
