Miniature infrared sensor

A noncontact temperature sensor that is small and inexpensive, is available from PREI Instrumentation. The Raytek CI (compact infrared) sensor is housed in a threaded stainless steel cylinder, only 87 mm long and 19 mm in diameter. Two models cover the range 0 to 500°C with an accuracy of 2% and a response time of 300 ms. Available accessories include air or water cooling, mounting brackets, and lens purging. It uses a 12 to 24 V d.c. supply, and provided a type J or type K thermocouple output signal, or a linear voltage of 10 mV/°C.

This 4-wire sensor has an output impedance of 50 Ohm (similar to thermocouples), and thereby eliminates the accuracy problems inherent with self-powered or 2-wire systems, which have impedance's of 5000 to 10 000 Ohm.

Common applications for these rugged little thermometers include paper and plastic presses, food processing equipment, continuous drying conveyors, and wherever size, price and accuracy are of significance.
