The SABS at its National electrical test facility (NEFTA) uses ISOBE 3000s from Nicolet during the measuring of high voltages and currents in its high voltage, high current and high power laboratories. The ISOBE 3000 is a fibre-optic isolated probe which has been designed for situations where remote isolated measurements need to be made.
Spescom MeasureGraph's Product Specialist Trevor Leong says the ISOBE 3000 is suitable for a variety of applications including motor controls, power distribution, power supply testing, high voltage, ballistics and physiology. He says the DC to 15 MHz bandwidth allows for the elimination of scope floating, meaning that measurements can be made in high voltage, high EMI or other hazardous environments where it is necessary to separate the measurement from the test equipment.
"NEFTA, in its different laboratories, tests a wide range of high power distribution equipment against local and international specifications. The very expensive data acquisition/monitoring equipment that is used for measuring the performance of products when subjected to high voltage and current can be damaged easily. The ISOBE 3000 protects these instruments during the tests.
"The ISOBE 3000 enables us to isolate the measurement from the recording system," says John Speedy, Manager Technology at the SABS. "Previously we used an in-house manufactured optic isolator but it became obsolete. The ISOBE 3000 enables us to perform more accurate measurements. The dual fibre optic cable between the transmitter and the receiver offers an unequalled combination of high bandwidth and DC stability. This guarantees the cleanest, most consistent signal possible."
Leong expands: "The dual fibre design of the ISOBE 3000 takes advantage of both the accuracy of pulse modulation and the wide bandwidth offered by intensity modulation. The more accurate pulse modulated channel is used to continuously calibrate the gain and offset of the higher bandwidth intensity modulated channel, assuring accurate wideband signal transmission at distances up to 100 metres."
Speedy says that the ISOBE 3000 was chosen because Nicolet products are used and respected around the world. Spescom MeasureGraph, a subsidiary of JSE-listed Spescom Limited and a leading supplier of test and measurement equipment, is the sole distributor of Nicolet products locally.
