Protea Automation Solutions has been awarded a R2,5m contract for the supply of 14 Tytronics analysers which will be installed in different water treatment plants within the Johannesburg Water area. The Tytronics Sentinel series will be supplied, 11 dual stream and three single stream, to monitor the phosphate content in the effluent to between 0 and 3 ppm.
The Tytronics Sentinel is said to be the first on-line analyser dedicated to the monitoring of wastewater. It is used extensively to detect the presence of fluoride, chlorine, ammonia, manganese, phosphate, nitrate, alkalinity, hardness, aluminium, and iron. Tytronics' sample technique provides the simplest and most reliable method of capturing a reproducible volume of sample. The sample inlet uses large-bore tubing that alleviates downtime by clearing blockages caused by suspended solids. The inlet system uses an internal fast loop ensuring that a fresh and representative sample is available for analysis.
The chemical parameters that can be measured cover an impressive wide field - colour, iron, manganese, phosphate, nitrate, fluoride, alkalinity, aluminium, hardness, ammonia, nitrate, copper, and free and/or total chlorine. The Sentinel can be expanded to analyse up to six separate sample streams per analyser. The colorimetric system uses dual wavelength optical configuration and an autoblank feature to compensate for background colour and turbidity. The Sentinel also has the facility to compensate for electronic drift on each analysis cycle and allows for automatic slope calibration.
The Sentinel is a fully automated, on-line system, reducing possible human error, and compensating for all temperature and pH variations. It is provided in an IP65 enclosure and provided with RS232 interface facility for external data access.
Analysers for use in high ambient temperature environments
Analytical Instrumentation & Environmental Monitoring
The 993X series of analysers from Ametek Process Industries are now IECEx Zone 2 certified for use in locations with up to 60°C ambient temperature. Built with IP66-rated enclosures and using an integrated cooling system, they can be installed outdoors or in minimally temperature-controlled enclosures, reducing complexity while lowering capital and operating costs.

At its peak in 1994, the energy generation capacity of the UK’s nuclear power stations was 12,7 GW across 16 plants. In 2024, the capacity has fallen to around 5 GW, and the number of stations is down to nine. However, this is far from the end of the story as spent nuclear fuel remains radioactive for centuries, and requires rigorous safety processes to safeguard against leaks.
