Buoyancy/interface transmitters

Foxboro buoyancy/displacement transmitters employ the Archimedes principle, whereby a buoyant force is exerted on a displacer suspended in a liquid. Available from Protea Automation Solutions, these highly regarded instruments are generally applied where optimum accuracy in low measuring ranges is required, or when shut-off is required without draining the tank.

They are suitable for corrosive and high and low temperature fluids, high static pressures, or fluids with foam build-up, low or medium viscosity, or settling solids. They are available in two separate sensor versions: torque tube and strain gauge.

The strain gauge transmitters are robust, field-proven, with easy installation, and reduced maintenance costs. They are commonly used to measure level in storage tanks and related applications where trouble-free operation is required. Few replacement parts are ever needed, and the electronic modules can be remotely mounted and easily replaced in the field without degradation of performance.

The torque tube transmitter's design allows the use of an environmentally protected torque sensor so that a wide range of displacer sizes and weights can be accommodated with a single sensor. They are good for applications involving extreme temperatures - up to 400°C - high pressure ratings, or where small displacers are required. They are also commonly used for low density and fluid interface measurements with low density differential. Due to their standard curve fitting ability, users have a choice of not only linear output for level but also characterised output for volume in nonlinear tanks such as horizontal cylinders class 1500/pn 50c.

Bi-directional communication via the Hart and FoxCom protocol is possible using PC software or universal handheld terminals. The transmitters are approved for use in hazardous areas.
