Opening up communications links in Africa

Data Acquisition & Telemetry
The identification of a need within the growing telecommunications market in Africa to provide cost-effective and reliable communications led to the formation of Satellite Wireless Networking. Since the company's inception in late 2001, it has been supplying satellite, terrestrial and Internet related services to users on the African continent.
Sarel Taute, managing director of Satellite Wireless Networking, describes the company as a solutions provider that has the ability to integrate both old and new wireless and related technologies to produce the best practice communication systems for any given application.

"The lack of physical infrastructure and poor provision of services in Africa has, until now, denied the corporate, SMME and SOHO markets the access levels they need to prosper both in their own countries and across the continent and even further," Taute says.
"The application of wireless technologies is already having a marked and positive effect in meeting the needs of African and multinational business sectors on the continent," he says.
Taute says that Satellite Wireless Networking, as a subsidiary of Multisource Telecoms - the leading specialised wireless telecommunication service provider in southern Africa - is well positioned to service the African continent. The company is fully geared to meet the needs of newly licensed VSAT, ISP and wireless local loop (WLL) operators throughout Africa. In addition, SWN engages with qualified customers and partners to form joint venture operations in selected countries for the provision of VoIP Gateway services, WLL networks and wireless ISP (WISP) networks.
Current examples of projects either successfully completed or underway include the following:
* The provision of a 'wireless IP cloud' over the entire mining area of a prominent gold producer in Africa connecting all the administrative, production and other remote mining sites for a number of different applications, such as telephony, video, CCTV and integrated data control systems.
* A major microwave backbone network for the incumbent ILEC (PTT) in the Republic of Congo.
* An exclusive Voice-over IP gateway (VoIP).
* An exclusive wireless local loop network and operation.
Satellite Wireless Networking is also committed to developing skills and knowledge in the field of telecommunications in Africa, as well as assisting in bridging the knowledge and experience gap by the delivery of educational services such as business and technical training, customised to meet individual customer requirements.
Taute says that the company develops partnerships with licence holders in African countries and then provides end-to-end design, integration, configuration, implementation and commissioning of custom designed solutions for a given communication application.
"It is interesting that Satellite Wireless Networking has fast become an accepted name in the communication field throughout Africa, and is seen by many as the partner of choice," Taute concludes.
