Next-generation temperature controllers

May 2002 PLCs, DCSs & Controllers

Omron's E5*N range of temperature controllers are devices available in four DIN-standard sizes, offering all the functionality and performance needed for modern temperature control applications.

Compact and intelligent, the E5AN (1/4 DIN), E5EN (1/8 DIN), E5CN (1/16 DIN) and E5GN (1/32 DIN) can be configured to run in either heating or heating/cooling control modes. All the controllers can operate in either On/Off or 2-PID control modes and are available in a wide variety of temperature inputs (thermocouple, Pt100, noncontact temperature sensor and analog). Relay, voltage and current output types are available in the three larger units, with relay and voltage output models available in the E5GN series. Both auto-tuning and self-tuning features are standard across the ranges; with the controllers able to perform auto-tuning even when self-tuning is being executed.

A useful option on the temperature controllers is the communications capability. RS485 communications is available across the range of controllers, allowing up to 32 temperature controllers to be networked, simplifying both programming and system integration; in addition, an RS232C option is available for both the E5AN and E5EN. The controllers can all be programmed with Omron's SYS-Config software, which is supplied free of charge upon request.

Further options on the three larger units include an event input unit (enabling the setting of up to four independent set points and the run/stop function) as well as a heater burnout alarm.

The front panel on all controllers is protected to NEMA4X (IP66), allowing full hose down - a feature that is especially important in, for example, food industry applications. The controllers conform to UL, CSA and IEC safety standards, and are CE marked to all relevant EN directives.
